ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
There are many reasons why your child's attendance at school is so important. Here are a few of the most important ones:
Academic achievement: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academically. This is because they are able to learn the material that is being taught and they are able to get help from their teachers when they need it.
Social-emotional development: School is a great place for students to develop their social-emotional skills. They learn how to interact with other students and adults, they learn how to resolve conflicts, and they learn how to cope with stress.
Future success: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to be successful in the future. They are more likely to get a good job, they are more likely to go to college, and they are more likely to live a healthy and happy life.
Here are some tips for helping your child attend school regularly:
Talk to your child about the importance of attendance. Explain to them that attending school is important for their academic achievement, social-emotional development, and future success.
Set a good example. Make sure that you attend work or school regularly yourself. This will show your child that you value education and that you think it is important to be there.
Make sure that your child is getting enough sleep. Students who are well-rested are more likely to be alert and attentive in class.
Help your child with their homework. This will help them to understand the material that is being taught and it will help them to stay on top of their work.
Talk to your child's teacher if they are having trouble attending school. The teacher may be able to offer some suggestions or help you to find resources that can help your child.
Attendance is important for all students, but it is especially important for students who are struggling academically or who are at risk for dropping out of school. By helping your child attend school regularly, you can give them the best possible chance for success.

Dear Families,
As principal of Jefferson Elementary Center, I take great pride in my school and school community. We make every effort to be present, visible and available to our students, families and community. It is easy to find an administrator on duty at entrances in the morning at arrival and again at dismissal. You will find us on duty at lunch and at school events and functions. I can be reached easily via a school phone call: 304-420-9554, via ROOMS app, Schoology email (search Christina Lowers- you will see my picture), email:
clowers@k12.wv.us or by personal contact at school. I am happy to address your concerns, questions and hear your suggestions. I also have two amazing Assistant Principals ready to help: Mrs. Jeni Hopkins, SPED and Attendance & Ms. Cindy Oxender, Curriculum and Instruction.
Equally, you have other opportunities for your voice to be heard:
Have you contacted your child's teacher? Do you check Schoology for grades, assignments, newsletters or to email your child's teacher?
https://www.woodcountyschoolswv.com/page/schoology. If you need help logging in, let us know!
Do you have the WCS app to keep up on events? Download the WCS app
Do you check the school website for WCS (
https://www.woodcountyschoolswv.com/) or Jefferson Elementary?
https://www.woodcountyschoolswv.com/o/jec.
Are you signed up on ROOMS to communicate with your child's teacher?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXrg3kPb98Q&t=1s
Attend a PTA meeting? Next one 5:30 pm on October 3 in the library
Participate on LSIC (Local School Improvement Council)? Two meetings have been held in Sept- with no parent presence. Next meeting October 29 at 5:30.
Attend one of our many Parent Engagement opportunities? Most recent Grade 2 activity had a fantastic turnout!
Is your preferred contacts and phone numbers up to date with the office / nurse?
Do you check your child's red folder daily? Lots of important information goes home each week. Folders are a great way to send messages to your child's teacher- including excuses for absences. If we don't receive a notice from home, the attendance is marked UNEXCUSED. Once a student misses 3-5 days, an attendance letter goes home. Once a student misses 5 days, an attendance meeting may be scheduled. Magnets went home at Open House to promote '9 days or less for student success! Attendance matters.'
At Jefferson, we strive to have a partnership between school and home. Together, we can help your child maximize his/her potential and overcome barriers and be the best version of themselves that they can be. *Parent Teacher conferences are not until Nov. 4....if you have questions, don't wait. Act now.
Jefferson also has two full time counselors, a Family Liaison, Social Worker, full time nurse and access to Ritchie Regional Health services (including mental health).
We look forward to working with you and wish everyone an amazing 2024-25!
Warmest regards,
Mrs. Lowers
