Good evening. On January 19, 2021, students will return to in-person instruction in our schools. However, I fully understand that some students and families are uncomfortable about returning to school in-person. To provide more opportunities for our students, WCS is requesting all students wishing to be instructed in an off-campus learning model, outside of our schools for the second semester, complete the form attached in this correspondence or visit the Wood County Schools website for more information. Depending on the number of students wishing to be instructed off-campus, we may have the ability to offer families and students different choices rather than just the WV Learns- Virtual School program. Once again, if you wish for your child to be instructed off-campus second semester, please complete the enrollment form. The form is due by 3:30 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2021.
Thank you and have a great evening.

If your child is utilizing WV Virtual School for instruction, nothing will change for the next few weeks.

Hello this is Mr. Hardman Principal at Van Devender Middle School. As I am talking with teachers and parents, the overwhelming thing is that students are struggling. We have a lot of students still not completing assignments. The grading period ends on January 22nd. There is still time to get assignments completed. I encourage everyone to check your child's Schoology to see how they are doing. I encourage you to reach out to teachers for assistance. We have a great staff that will help in anyway they can. I also want to let everyone know that when I checked the iReady online instructional report only 29% of the students have worked on their math this week and only 25% of the students have worked on their reading this week. The requirement is still 45 minutes a week for math and 45 minutes a week for reading. Please check with your child and make sure they are working on these assignments. If we can help in anyway please let us know.

The following links will show you how to check your students midterm grades through Schoology.

Schoology Help (Borrowed from teachers post on FB)
Couple things to help you all:
1. Go to Status.Schoology.com to check if Schoology is having the issue/ your internet/ or the student is pulling one over on you.
2. Get your parent code to help monitor if they are actually turning in the work and to see what assignments are due when (call school or email teacher for code) **https://bit.ly/3ooDh0k quick parent tutorial on setting up Schoology parent account.
3. See if the teacher has posted the video for the lesson and have them rewatch the instruction (or watch for the first time).
4. Email the teacher- we want to hear from you all!!
5. Help them with time management and reduce distractions while on meetings
6. Hopefully this is temporary... don’t ruin relationships because of a 10 point assignment.
Please contact us at Vandy if you have questions or need assistance. We are here to help.

WVSSAC is looking at potentially staring Winter Sports on January 11, 2021 (Basketball, Cheer and Wrestling). This will be the end of the first semester. If sports start and you do not have passing grades at the end of the first semester you will not be eligible to play sports for the remainder of the school year. Get your work in Student Athletes.

In the event of a snow day remote learning will still take place but it will run on a modified bell schedule. Teachers will be coming into work on a two-hour delay. The modified bell schedule is as follows:
10:00am-10:30am (1st Period)
10:30am-11:00am (2nd Period)
11:00am-11:30am (3rd Period)
11:30am-12:00pm (4th Period)
1:00pm-1:30pm (5th Period)
1:30pm-2:00pm (6th Period)
2:00pm-2:30pm (7th Period)
2:30-3:00pm (8th Period)

There seems to be an issue with Schoology this morning. They are working to resolve the issue. Please be patient and check back in periodically.

Only 30% of our parents/guardians have signed up for their Schoology Parent accounts. Please call Vandy so we can get this information to you if you have not already done so. It is the best way for you to stay on top of your child's schoolwork and communicate with teachers. 304-420-9645

Attention all students interested in athletics:
Eligibility for sports is dependent on your grades. You must have a “C” average or above in order to play on any school sports team.
All 6th graders are eligible to play sports when they first come to Middle School however their academic eligibility changes after the first semester of middle school (January 22, 2021). If the student has below a “C” average at the end of the first semester, they will be academically ineligible for any middle school sport the rest of the school year. If they have below a “C” average at the end of the second semester, they will be academically ineligible for any school sport until the end of the first semester the following school year (2021/2022).
7th/8th graders academic eligibility for the first semester of school is based off of their grades from the end of the previous year. Their second semester grades from the previous year will make them eligible or ineligible for Fall sports of the current year. This eligibility or ineligibility is good until the end of the first semester (January 22, 2021). If a student athlete does not have a “C” average or above at the end of the first semester, they will be academically ineligible for sports the second semester. If they happen to be on a team at that time, they would be cut from that team due to grades. If a student has below a “C” average at the end of the second semester of school, they will be academically ineligible for sports during the first semester of the following school year (2021/2022).
Basketball, Wrestling and Cheer have been cancelled for the remainder of the calendar year (2020). These sports have a possibility of taking place in January 2021. If you are a student athlete or you are interested in becoming a student athlete, then it is imperative that you bring your grades up to a “C” average. Please contact Mr. Echard at Vandy with questions.
