We will have our last book fair of the school year May 22 to May 31st. There will be a parent event focused on summer reading on May 31st where families can visit the fair as well. Set up an eWallet for your child so they can purchase from the fair without bringing cash or a card to school. You can add to their eWallet throughout May until the fair opens on May 22. We look forward to seeing you all visit the fair.


Our 8th grades will be taking the West Virginia GSA testing for Science on Wednesday, May 1. Testing will begin at 8:02. Please have your child get a good night's sleep the day before and have them eat a good breakfast on Wednesday morning. Breakfast is available at school every morning as well. This GSA is cumulative and will test science knowledge and skills from 6th, 7th, and 8 grade. They should use their scrap paper and do their very best work on this test.

Dear Parents and students of the Van Devender 8th Grade. There will be a parent/student meeting for all parents and students going on or involved with the trip to Washington D.C. at the end of May. The meeting will be held at Van Devender Middle School in the cafeteria on Tuesday April 30th starting at 6:00pm. If you or your child is attending this trip your attendance is highly recommended. Good morning Vandy 8th grade parents, on Tuesday April 23, 2024, Brian Sprague counselor from Parkersburg High School will be presenting information to parents about Freshman classes. This will be an informational session to answer any questions you may have about scheduling and the transition to High School. The meeting will start at 5:00pm in our gymnasium. Tomorrow April 5th, 2024, all of our Vandy 8th grade students will be going to PHS for another GameChanger Event. They will be attending a show sponsored by the city in the auditorium. The buses will leave at 8:45am and the event will start at 9:30am. The event will last for approximately an hour and students should be back at Vandy by 11:15am. All Wood County Schools after-school and evening activities will be CANCELLED tonight (Tuesday, April 2, 2024) due to incoming inclement weather. Schools will dismiss at their normal times today.

Tomorrow March 22, 2024, the Vandy 8th grade students will be spending the day at WVU-Parkersburg. They will be in groups and will rotate through 6 departments to learn about different career opportunities they have available to them post-graduation. We are very excited for this amazing opportunity for our students. The 8th grade students will be out of the building from 8:30am-2:30pm. The West Virginia Governor and the Parkersburg Mayor will be delivering an important message to our students about the Opioid Epidemic in West Virginia. Our students will be watching a video titled “One Pill Can Kill”. This video can be viewed at GameChangerusa.org. This is an entire school field trip. Students will not be in the building at Van Devender between the hours of 10:30am-12:45pm. Plan accordingly if you have appointments scheduled for your students.

Good morning, this is Mr. Echard principal of Van Devender Middle School. I have two announcements for you today. First, our planned field trip to Parkersburg High School tomorrow has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict for the Governor. It will be rescheduled for March 18th and follow the same arrangements as before.
Second, our students will be taking the Writing General Summative Assessment this Wednesday March 6. The assessment will be administered in the morning. I want to encourage all students to make every effort to be at school on this day and to try their hardest on the assessment.
Please remember to always be kind, work hard and represent.

Calendar update: In order to account for missed school days due to inclement weather, students will now attend school on May 31 as well as June 3 and 4. Preschool will attend May 28 and 29. For staff, June 5 will be a curriculum development day (students do not attend) and June 6 will be a day to prepare for the end of the school year (students do not attend).

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Wood County Board of Education will meet in special session Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, to conduct candidate interviews and appoint an interim board member to a vacant seat. The board has consulted with the Wood County Prosecutor’s Office and the Wood County Clerk’s Office and has been advised, due to election cycle deadlines, a selection must be made by February 12, 2024.
The online application period for those interested in applying for the interim position will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, February 12. The board meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. to announce the candidates and interviews will begin at 6:00 p.m. An appointment announcement will follow the completion of the interviews on February 12.
Those submitting an application by Sunday, February 11, will be informed of their interview time before 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 12. Applicants submitting applications on Monday, February 12, will be contacted as applications are received throughout the day to have interviews arranged for that evening.

Wood County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay on Monday, January 22, 2024.

Wood County Schools will be closed on Friday, January 19, 2024 due to inclement weather.
