On Tuesday night, the Wood County Board of Education approved Mr. Hosaflook's proposed plan for students to return to school 4 days a week (Mon-Thurs) starting November 9th for elementary students. This plan also gives parents a choice of doing remote learning 5 days a week through Schoology. If you would like your child to participate in the 5 day remote learning starting November 9th, please contact the school office or your child's teacher as soon as possible. Administration will then be contacting you in the upcoming week to give you further instructions. If you are currently enrolled in WV Virtual School, you may remain in that program. It is important that we know instructional preferences so that we may prepare for our students who are learning on and off campus. Thank you for being flexible and supportive during this unprecedent time.

Please remember to have your students to login in to Schoology to do their assignments and complete their iReady minutes while they are on their remote learning days. Completing these assignments are vital for them to continue to progress through their grade level standards for the year. Mrs. Kay, our secretary, has called everyone who still has a yearbook to pick up. If you haven't got yours yet, please call and make arrangements to get those. We have a limited supply yearbooks from the 2019-2020 school year available in the office for purchase at a cost of $15.00. Send the money with a note with your student and we will make sure they get one. Our RADA Fundraiser is still going on. The last day to purchase is October 31st. https://bit.ly/3k84DG9 The items get shipped directly to the person who orders.

Students have started taking the iReady Math & Reading Diagnostic. These are comprehensive assessments that give us important information about student academic strengths and weaknesses. Once students complete the diagnostic assessment, iReady will provide students with instructional lessons specific to what they need. Lessons are not available until the diagnostic has been completed and will be a part of students at home learning assignments once the diagnostics are finished. Another important piece of iReady is goal setting. Based on the results, each student will have a growth goal for reading and for math. We will take the diagnostic assessments two more times during the year to monitor progress towards meeting these goals.

Schoology Update: Teachers have been getting to know your students the last few days. They will slowly be introducing them how to use Schoology over the next few weeks and begin to put more and more assignments on the platform. When your student logs into Schoology, if they have any assignments with due dates these will show up on the right side of the screen or on their calendar. You can also find assignments by clicking on the Courses at the top and choosing each of the individual courses listed. These courses are auto populated based upon their official schedule. There may be courses that remain empty the entire time if the teacher chooses to put the assignments under another tab. If you need help with Schoology related questions, we have a help desk stationed at the school from 3:30-5:30. Many of the issues we have had is that the correct web link isn’t being used to login be sure to use https://wcswv.schoology.com or go to Wood County Schools Web page, Click on Menu, and then the icon that says Schoology. The app is installed on the iPads, but the web link is much more user friendly.

Tomorrow the day finally arrives that half our students(last names l-z) will be returning to school and the other half (last names a-k) arrive Wednesday, for their first day of school in 6 months, and for the school year 2020-2021. Please remember that students must be wearing a mask as they enter the school building and in common areas. In addition they will need: a filled water bottle(our refilling stations should be here any day), ipad charged and ready to go (you can keep the charger at home), a note of how they are getting home the first day of school and the rest of the year (teachers would normally get this info at open house), and a backpack to tote things back and forth (we had some donated if you still need one). See you in the morning!

Welcome
This is a reminder that the 2020-2021 school year will begin on Tuesday, September 8th for students with last names beginning with L-Z. On Wednesday, September 9th, students with last names A-K will report to school. Due to Monday being Labor Day, students with last names A-K will report Friday, September 11th as well. Please visit the Wood County Schools website, and then click “2020-2021 Re-entry Summarization” for more details. Our re-entry schedule has not changed since being published. Students will attend school on a Blended-Model of instruction for 3 weeks, which is our Yellow Schedule, or until proper procedures, protocols, and new standards have been taught and implemented. Also, please do not confuse yourself with the WVDE color-coded map. The map is used as one of many tools to drive local decisions for our school system. As mentioned in previous communications, we will closely monitor the data each day to make well-informed and deliberate decisions, while keeping safety as the top priority for our students and employees. Over the last six months, we have worked diligently and methodically to create a well-rounded plan for re-entry. I’m sure we have not thought about every issue that may arise - please be patient as we work through making adjustments, changing protocols or procedures, and seeking feedback from our stakeholders to make this school year a great success. Although not a requirement, I am asking each student to bring their own mask and bottle of water on the first day of school. This will help expedite first day procedures and practices for our schools as they begin teaching expected behaviors for the year. Students will receive a Wood County mask on the first day and will be expected to possess and use it on a continual basis as we navigate through a new normal for our school system. We are so excited to see your children in our schools once again. We have greatly missed their presence the last six months. As always, make sure to Wear a mask, Watch your distance, and Wash your hands. To view our first WCS Newsletter, please click https://tinyurl.com/yxbaddej Have a safe and wonderful Holiday weekend.

Dismissal Procedures have changed for student picked up at Neale. All parents must remain in the car and drive thru the back lot's loop to pick up your student. Numbers were passed out during iPad distribution. These numbers will need to be visible in the dash of your car. Numbers 1-100 will be dismissed at 2:45. Numbers 101-200 will be dismissed at 2:55. If someone else is picking up your student for the day please send a note with your child or call the office, and give that person your number, if possible.

Good evening, Each Sunday evening, from this day forward, I will provide all stakeholders an update from the WVDHHR and WVDE Covid-19 metrics data for Wood County. The metics data will be used to govern activities and other requirements in our school system for the upcoming week. This week, Wood County has a 2.74 average seven day trend, which includes 16 probable and confirmed positive cases the last seven days. We will continue to analyze the data of the metrics, and make necessary adjustments on protocols and procedures in our schools based on current trends. For the upcoming week of August 31, Wood County is “Green” on the metrics; therefore, all co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are allowed to participate. However, three counties in WV - Kanawha, Monroe, and Logan are orange or red in the metrics and will not be allowed to participate in any activities this week. As you can see, this is a community driven metrics, which has serious implications for our school system. Please do your part and encourage others on the 3 W’s to help our students return in-person to our schools - Wear a mask, Watch your distance, and Wash your hands. Once again, please download our mobile app on our website and continually check the “News” feed to stay up to date on what is happening in our schools. Keep up the great work. Have a great evening.
