At Greenmont Elementary, learning goes beyond the textbook, and Mrs. Berner’s first-grade class recently experienced this firsthand with an engaging unit on “Where Our Food Comes From.” Throughout the unit, students explored the journey of food—from farms to tables—learning about agriculture, food production, and the importance of different ingredients.

To bring the lesson to life, the class concluded their studies with a special hands-on activity: baking their own bread. This experience allowed students to see the process in action, reinforcing their understanding of how simple ingredients come together to create something delicious. The excitement was evident as students measured, mixed, and watched their dough transform into warm, freshly baked bread.

Mrs. Berner’s creative approach to teaching made learning both fun and meaningful, helping her students develop a deeper appreciation for the food they eat. The unit not only taught valuable science and social studies concepts but also provided a memorable experience that will stick with students long after the last crumb was eaten!
